Beauty and ability can coexist

I once heard a saying that when a friend of a friend went for facial micro-adjustments, she deliberately made herself less beautiful. I was really puzzled when I heard this; isn't the normal thing to make yourself more beautiful? Her friend said: when you're too beautiful, men only focus on your looks rather than your abilities. While I understand her dilemma, if it were me, I wouldn't do that. I still believe that external beauty can coexist with inner meaning and ability. If I had to sacrifice my natural gifts to achieve another possibility, I'd think it was a great shame. Why can't a woman be both beautiful and capable? I want to be someone who has both looks and substance!
