Mount Semeru: Haze at the Summit

Standing at the foot of Mount Semeru, expecting to witness the towering, sharp crest of Java’s highest peak pierce the clouds, only to be met by a thick, stubborn wall of haze, is a quiet kind of heartbreak. You travel all that way, waiting for that iconic silhouette to pull back the curtain, but nature decides to keep its grandest show behind a fogged-up glass. It’s disappointing when the view you mapped out in your head gets replaced by an endless slate of grey, concealing the sheer power and scale of the mountain sitting right in front of you. Still, even when the summit stays hidden and the backdrop robs you of that postcard moment, there’s an eerie, humbling energy to being in the presence of a giant you can feel, but cannot see.
