Cambodia: A Journey Through History and Beauty

Travelling Cambodia was an amazing experience, even with the current situation. It was absolutely worth it and felt very safe. I saw the Mekong river for the first time, learned about the Khmer Rouge history and the killing fields, discovered how pepper is grown in Kampot, relaxed at the beach in Koh Rong, and spent two wonderful weeks in my favourite place, Siem Reap. I was even there during the Bon Om Touk water festival and met some fantastic people.
Angkor Wat is truly beautiful! I became friends with the tuk-tuk driver who picked me up from the bus station, and he drove us around the temples for three days. I also visited Apopo, an organisation that uses rats to find and deactivate landmines that still affect Cambodia from past conflicts.
It's heartbreaking to see how much suffering has occurred here, how it still impacts people's lives today, and that similar challenges are happening again. We will never forget, but it feels like we sometimes struggle to learn from past mistakes.
