Colombian Coffee Farm Visits

Day 4 and 5 🇨🇴
We took off from Bogota to Pitalito (a small town in Huila state) for our very first farm visits.
It’s incredible to meet coffee people on the other side of the chain and witness their level of hard work, knowledge, passion and dedication that they have in their work. All these aside, what I have also experienced is that they are extremely humble, kind and genuine human beings.
We did some coffee picking even though we are not very good at it. Coffee trees here grow on a slope of around 45 degrees, and I can’t imagine how experienced coffee pickers can pick up to 200kg per day.
We finished off the days by doing plenty of cupping. And these cuppings are an extraordinary experience for us because we were cupping the coffees that come from the farmers that we just personally met, talked to, and got to know.
Imagine buying coffees from farmers you personally know and selling it back at the cafe or roaster to the end consumers whom you have established personal relationships with.
To me, speciality coffee should be a lot more than transactional in every segment of the chain. Of course, it involves science, art, craftsmanship, and many more things if you want to add.
But most importantly, it involves human relationships.
